Interim solution for hydrogen fuelling at Cottbusverkehr GmbH
Together with Cottbusverkehr, FPS.Energy delivered a pragmatic and economical way into hydrogen-based mobility. At the heart of the project was a pressure-transfer panel that allows hydrogen buses to be fuelled quickly and safely – without having to build a fully equipped hydrogen filling station straight away.
The pressure-transfer panel is connected directly to a hydrogen trailer and is a technically simple alternative to a stationary hydrogen filling station, with considerably less permitting effort. Thanks to the short installation time, transport operators can put their hydrogen fleet into service while the permanent fuelling infrastructure is being built in parallel.
Depending on how the trailer solution is configured, several vehicles can be supplied reliably. In the Cottbus project, the complete technical interface between hydrogen provision, pressure control and vehicle fuelling was implemented successfully and validated under real operating conditions. The work covered the entire process chain – from providing RFNBO hydrogen and precise pressure and temperature conditioning to standard-compliant transfer to the fuelling equipment.
With the pre-commissioning inspection (PVI) and the subsequent test phase successfully completed, the hydrogen buses were able to enter regular service and run reliably in Cottbus city traffic today.
The project shows that the ramp-up of hydrogen mobility does not have to wait for a stationary hydrogen filling station to be finished. With intelligent interim solutions, operators can run their vehicles emission-free today while advancing the build-out of permanent hydrogen infrastructure. A pressure-transfer panel can also serve as a redundant fuelling option once a stationary hydrogen filling station is in operation, increasing security of supply in day-to-day service.
