Hydrogen mobility at Hamburg Airport – building sustainable infrastructure for airport operations

Hamburg Airport is the largest international commercial airport in northern Germany and the fifth-largest airport in Germany – with more than 15,000 employees and over 14 million passengers a year. The goal is to cut the greenhouse gas emissions of airport operations to zero by 2035.

Trialling hydrogen vehicles in airport operations

A hydrogen-powered baggage tractor prototype is being trialled as part of a test programme. Around 60 baggage tractors are currently in use at Hamburg Airport; the trial runs over the summer months.

Flexible hydrogen supply by FPS.Energy

FPS.Energy (formerly Ryze Power GmbH) provides a mobile fuelling panel and delivers fuel-cell-grade hydrogen by tube trailer. One to five fuelling operations take place each day at a pressure level of 350 bar, with 15 to 40 kilograms of hydrogen per fuelling.

Outlook: expanding the hydrogen infrastructure at Hamburg Airport

In the long term the temporary solution is to be replaced by a permanent, container-based hydrogen refuelling station (HRS), initially supplied by truck.

Advancing hydrogen technology for ground handling

The first project for an H2 baggage tractor started back in 2019, trialled at Bristol Airport, Cranfield University and Riga Airport. The current test marks a further milestone: the first hydrogen combustion engine integrated into a series vehicle already in service – in collaboration with the company HTM, which combines a dual hydrogen combustion engine with an electric drive system. The project is also supported by the Norddeutsches Reallabor (NRL).
