Decarbonising heat supply – the Lehnitz barracks demonstration project

At more than 50 % of total final energy consumption, heat is the largest energy-consuming sector in Germany. Around 79 % of the almost 20 million residential buildings are still heated with oil or gas – an enormous decarbonisation potential that industry and municipalities are increasingly tapping with large heat pumps, waste heat recovery, geothermal energy, hydrogen, the electrification of process heat and mobile, flexible energy supply solutions.

At the Lehnitz barracks, FPS.Energy demonstrated how decarbonising heat supply works in practice. At the heart of the project is a combined heat and power unit from Tuxhorn that can run on both natural gas and hydrogen. This fuel flexibility allows a step-by-step switch to climate-neutral heat without endangering security of supply – existing gas infrastructure remains usable and is made fit for the future at the same time.

Hydrogen plays to its strengths in the heat transition above all where high temperatures are needed or where existing gas infrastructure is to remain in use. The demonstration project at the Lehnitz barracks shows that this technology path already works today – providing a transferable model for properties, municipalities and industrial sites on the way to climate-neutral heat supply.
